Finding Refuge in God’s Goodness
“Yahweh is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knows those who take refuge in him.”
Reflection
In the brief yet powerful proclamation of Nahum 1:7, we hear a comforting refrain: "Yahweh is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knows those who take refuge in him." Though the book of Nahum warns of judgment against Nineveh, this verse reminds us that even amid looming disaster, the character of God remains unchanged—He is good and trustworthy.
When the prophet says God is a "stronghold," he paints a picture of a fortified place where the weary can find safety. In our own lives, the "day of trouble" might be a health crisis, a broken relationship, or the anxiety that comes with uncertainty. Yet the same God who protected Israel can be our shelter today, offering a solid, immovable rock that does not wobble when the storms rage.
The second half of the verse, "he knows those who take refuge in him," speaks of intimate knowledge and personal care. God does not merely provide a generic shelter; He knows each person who leans on Him, understands their fears, and meets them where they are. This knowledge is not distant; it is a loving awareness that invites us to come as we are.
So, as we face modern troubles—financial stress, loneliness, or the noise of a busy world—let us remember that the goodness of Yahweh invites us to rest in His stronghold. By choosing to trust Him, we step into a relationship where His goodness becomes our daily reality, and His protection becomes our confidence.
Prayer
Lord, we thank You for the assurance that You are good and our stronghold in every trial. Help us to recognize the days of trouble and to run to You with confidence, knowing You know each of us intimately. Strengthen our faith to take refuge in Your steadfast love, and let Your goodness be the foundation of our hope. May we feel Your presence as a protective shelter, guiding us through each challenge we face together. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Application
Identify a current "day of trouble" in your life— whether it’s anxiety, a conflict, or a health concern. Write it down and then intentionally pause to declare that Yahweh is your stronghold over that situation.
Spend five minutes each morning recalling a specific way God has shown His goodness in the past. Let those memories remind you that He is trustworthy and ready to protect you today.
Choose a tangible act of refuge: it might be opening a Bible, praying aloud, or sharing your burden with a trusted friend, acknowledging that God knows you and invites you to lean on Him.
At the end of each day, reflect on moments when you felt God's protective presence. Thank Him for those instances and commit to seeking His stronghold again tomorrow.
