Chosen, Adopted, and Blessed: Our Identity in Christ
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ; even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without defect before him in love; having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his desire, to the praise of the glory of his grace, by which he freely gave us favor in the Beloved,”
Reflection
When Paul opens his letter with, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,” he invites us to pause and recognize the source of all good things. These are not earthly rewards that fade, but heavenly riches that belong to us because we are united with Christ. In everyday life—whether we’re facing a stressful deadline or a quiet moment of gratitude—this truth steadies our hearts, reminding us that God’s favor already surrounds us.
Paul continues, “even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without defect before Him in love.” The idea that God selected us before creation can feel abstract, yet it speaks directly to our sense of worth. Our identity is not based on performance or circumstance; it is rooted in God’s eternal purpose. When we stumble, we can rest in the assurance that He chose us to be loved, not because we are perfect, but because His love covers our imperfections.
Finally, “having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ… to the praise of the glory of His grace.” Adoption is a powerful picture—God invites us into His family, granting us a new name, inheritance, and a place at the table. This adoption is not earned; it flows from His “good pleasure.” As we live out this reality, our lives become a living testimony, praising the glorious grace that has freely given us favor in the Beloved.
Prayer
Loving Father, we thank You for the spiritual blessings You have poured out on us in the heavenly places. Help us to rest in the certainty that You chose us before the world began, and that our identity is secured in adoption as Your children. May the reality of Your grace shape our thoughts, words, and actions, so that we reflect holiness and love in a world that needs Your light. Strengthen us to live each day in gratitude, praising Your glorious name together as a family of believers. Amen.
Application
Each morning, pause for a few minutes and thank God for the spiritual blessings you have in Christ. Write down one specific blessing you notice during the day to keep your focus on heavenly riches.
When you feel inadequate, remind yourself that God chose you before the foundation of the world. Speak aloud, “I am chosen and loved,” and let that truth replace self‑doubt.
Celebrate your adoption by sharing a simple act of kindness with someone today, viewing it as a tangible expression of the grace you have received, and give thanks to God for the opportunity to reflect His love.
