First Things First: Living the Kingdom Priority

“But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Matthew 6:33

Reflection

Jesus' words in Matthew 6:33 cut through the noise of our daily worries like a clear bell in a crowded market. He tells us to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,” promising that everything else we need will be provided. In the Sermon on the Mount, He was responding to a crowd fretting over food, clothing, and security. Their anxiety mirrors our own—paychecks, health, relationships, the endless to‑do list. Yet Jesus invites us to flip the script: instead of scrambling for the next item on the list, we begin with the One who holds the whole picture.

Imagine a child waiting for a birthday present. The excitement builds, but the joy is complete only when the gift is finally opened. Likewise, our lives find true satisfaction when we first open our hearts to God's reign. Seeking the kingdom isn’t a one‑time event; it’s a daily posture of aligning our thoughts, choices, and actions with God’s values—love, justice, mercy. When we prioritize that, the “things” He promised—peace, provision, purpose—fall into place, often in ways we never expected.

So today, let us ask: What does it look like to put God’s kingdom at the top of our agenda? How can we let His righteousness shape our work, our family, our leisure? The invitation is simple, yet radical: start with Him, and watch the rest fall into God’s perfect order.

Prayer

Lord, we thank You for the promise that when we put Your kingdom first, You care for our needs. Help us to turn away from the frantic chase for security and instead fix our hearts on Your reign. Teach us to trust that You will supply what we truly need—peace, provision, and purpose. May our lives reflect Your righteousness in every decision, big or small. Strengthen our faith to wait on Your timing, and grant us the courage to prioritize You above all else. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Application

  1. Start each day with a short prayer or devotional that declares, “God’s kingdom comes first. ” Even five minutes of quiet focus helps set the tone, reminding us that everything else flows from that priority.

  2. Write down one specific task today that aligns with God’s values— perhaps showing kindness, seeking justice, or practicing honesty. Let that be your anchor, and let all other activities orbit around it.

  3. Look for a tangible way to serve someone today, whether it’s a listening ear, a generous gift, or a simple act of mercy. Serving others puts Kingdom values into action and keeps our focus on God’s righteousness.

  4. At night, briefly review your day. Ask, “Did I seek God’s kingdom first?” Celebrate the moments you succeeded and note where you can improve tomorrow, trusting that God will provide what you truly need.
